A Blessed Wifey

4.15.13
2013 Anniversary Shot....pre sun burn!

It finally came and then was over before you could click your heels three times.

The anniversary trip that is.

We left Friday and as quickly as Friday morning vanished it was Sunday afternoon and we were experiencing the grueling drive back up into the better Carolina.  (Sorry SC you have to admit it, you have Charleston.....and well that's it).

The trip was iced with beautiful weather that allowed us to spend Saturday afternoon laying on the sand and watching the Canadians play in the icey to us hot to them water.

I scored some new summer clothes and shoes.  The hubby scored a couple new tshirts to his dwindling collection and a "good" shirt to add to the going out rack.

I will never complain when I find a pair of Etienne Aigner and a pair of Naturalizer that fit great and are only $15 a pair!

I got the hots for my bag boy...
The trip was great, relaxing, enjoyable.  I didn't have a diaper to change, a five year old telling me she's bored or asking for a playdate, there were no cartoons on the television, and rum was a regular staple for one evening.....yes rejuvenated I am.

That was our first trip to Myrtle Beach, SC in four years.  We aren't MB people.  Nothing against any of you who are we just don't particularly care for it during "season".  We like the smaller beaches that afford the availablity of walking everywhere you want to go and where actually sitting on your porch or beach is considered a pasttime.  Cheap relaxing fun is a good seat and a blender.

I do miss the outlets (but we have them in Mebane too...and Blowing Rock....and Concord).  I miss hmmm....well.  I guess that is it.

Flat bill hats = stupid but with the Wolfpack emblem I may let this one pass.

My take on MB is you can only have so many shops with air brush art, MB tshirts, SC Palmetto decal stickers, and vulgar shirts before you go a little down the totem pole....
This is what MB will do to you....

The weather was great.  The beach was fantastic and Molly Darcy's was as delicious as it used to be.
Lunch view @ Molly Darcy's my favorite beach joint at Crescent Beach

Trying to figure out a camera mode - snap!

This trip was decorated with Canadians.  They call themselves snowbirds.  From November to May they come down and decorate the hotels, condos, and bars.  They say "ay" and "ya know".  I was seated next to an ancient Canadian at the bar in our hotel.  She was seventy-five, had a great accent and all she wanted to talk about was her time in the Congo.  I couldn't quite follow her - she was a union person in Canada and she was a doctor and she was a nurse and she lived in the arctic and she had inuit grandchildren and she went to Prague.  Needless to say after her incessant babble all I could remember was South Park and "Blame Canada" ------

My husband enjoyed talking to a man with do it yourself tats and a history at a steel mill.

--------------------------------------------

I love my husband.  He made this trip fanstastic.  It was a great change from the every day we all get so used to.  The driving the kids here and there, laundry, dishes, lunches, dinners, baths, boo boos.  It was a much needed break.  It was fun to force myself to stay in bed until 9am.  It was nice to be able to take showers when I wanted to without timing myself for five minutes.

The whole time we were there he said this trip was for me.  If  I wanted to do something we were doing it and if I wanted something I was getting it.  Being Queen of the Tightwads that last one wasn't a go because I wanted to find a great deal and would not settle for anything else.

He does a lot for me and the bambinos.  He works 45+ hours a week away from home and when he's here he's always working on making something better around here.  It doesn't go unnoticed.  He is a good husband and a good dad.

I am extremely, knowingly blessed.

See you guys later this week with some recipes.

Be good to each other and have a little fun,

When Xanax Doesn't Work

4.12.13

Last night we were all made aware that yes, indeed Sping is here!  Lightning, thunder, pouring rains, scared dogs.....
Everyone knows I have three kids.  My five year old princess, my seven month old boy, and my nearly ten year old shihtzu.  (The bichens do not count as my children, just my friends.)
No, I'm not some weirdo who thinks my dog is human.  He's only a quarter human.
I don't put clothes on him.  I have enough humans to put clothes on.
He doesn't have his own room - every room is his room.

I do, however, have lengthy discussions about various topics with him.  I describe how to do things to him.  We watch Real Housewives together (though, like a man, he sleeps through it).

Mr. Bert was a rescue.  He had been tossed out and when we found him he had super long, matted, knotted, nasty hair.  Extra sharp talons (which are ok for birds of prey but not Tibetan monk dogs).  He had ferocious breath thanks to a mouth of rotten teeth.  On his head was a huge tumor-esque bulge (about the size of Bubba Watson's golf balls).  He was scared of everything but.....us.  I brought him home, cut his hair off and took him to the vet.  He was chipped but the info on the chip was all dead ends and good for ten states away.  I made all attempts to get the owner to take their animal back.  Then the vet said, "You're his owner now."

This dog has been a source of total joy and total sorrow.

He's gentle and easy going and mainly sleeps 23 of 24 hours a day.  Until recently he wasn't too fond of his five year old blonde housemate.  He adores the baby.  He has seizures every now and then.  It takes him six minutes to take a leak because he's old and his urine stream is weak (if you are a human reading this and you just said "me too" under your breath quit reading and take your messed up peepee stream to the doctor).  He hates dog food and wants a seat at the table.  He loves to snuggle.

He also hates weather.

Since he's a shihtzu (at advanced age) he really cannot tolerate humidity - at all. (Welcome to North by God Carolina Bertie) -  First off, he's not really built for it.  His nose is mushed into his face so it cannot adequately cool his oxygen.  Second, he's got the worst allergies!  Only Pugs could sound more disgusting as they hock up yet another ball of slime.  He gets a little benadryl for his allergies but it doesn't effect him at all.  It doesn't force him comatose and it doesn't totally clear up his breathing.  I guess I am medicating myself through medicating him.  After you hear him cough up another mucous ball for the fifteenth time it begins to ware on you a tad bit.  You're also generally walking around with an arsenal of Lysol wipes in the event he can get an irritant up - yeah the benadryl should be way more effective than it is!

The cold is his friend but not for long because he wants the comfy 70 degrees of home.

Bertie's biggest nemesis is thunderstorms.

He cannot understand what the hell is going on.  All he hears:  loud crashes - all he sees: flashes of bright white across the sky.

He knows they are coming twenty minutes before they arrive.  Super Dopplar Bertie starts shaking like a leaf and won't move from whatever spot he is at.  Unless it is to follow me, his human mom.  When the thunder starts he begins to wander about the house like he's trying to find the culprit of the sound.  As soon as lightning cracks or thunder booms he's barking and running to be between my husband and I.  This is when I am thankful he is a shihtzu and not a wolfhound or Marmaduke.  Or really anything over thirteen pounds.

It isn't just thunder and lightning that scare him - hard rain does too.  He can hear rain pounding down and BOOM he's in fight or flight mode.  Well....for Bertie he's hung between fight or flight.

We tried giving him some medicine to calm him down but it doesn't work.  Thundershirt was a novel idea and it worked for a while but faded.  Rubbing him down with a dryer sheet did nothing.

In human years Bertie is 70. OK almost 70.  I think Bertie just may need a drink. God knows after being up with him all last night while my 7 1/2 month old slept soundly - mama needs a drink, preferably a tequila drink and I'm willing to share it with my loyal companion.

-------------------------------------------------

It is the weekend!  (Happy birthday weekend, Jennifer!)

I have been looking forward to this weekend for a while.  You'll see why on Monday/Tuesday.

I hope you guys have a safe and happy one.  I hear the weather is going to be pretty and comfy and springy - unlike the summer stuff we have had recently (that I adore).

If you're not sure what to have for dinner here's what we did the other night:

I'll call this:  Hot n Bothered Chicken

Step one:  Make some "homemade" ranch a couple hours prior to grilling.  I use Hidden Valley packets and I use Duke's Light Mayonnaise instead of regular full fat mayo.

Step two:  Make an easy yummy "homemade" side:

C's Baked Beans

Pick up a can of Bush's traditional baked beans
Add in four strips of bacon, 1/4 c of ketchup, 1/4c BBQ sauce, diced onion.

Put it all in a baking dish and bake it at 350 for 45 minutes

Grill up some chicken but add some flavor to it by dousing it in Texas Pete & seasoning it with Weber's Kickin' Chickin' (found in the spice section of your grocery store).

Put it all together with a beer and you got one heck of a weekend feast.

Rock out this weekend ya'll!

Demented Thursday

4.11.13

I must say today started rocky but has turned out pretty good - and that includes this edition of Demented Thursday.

For the fourth time (second time this week) or was today the fifth time....anyhoo for the unacceptable number of time this was, my washer died.  It worked like a charm except it refused to spin - ever - as in no spinning.  So my clothes, towels, sheets, etc would be saturated at the end of the wash.  I can see an issue one or two times but four or five...no.

Luckily, the local, small town, mom and pop dealer sent a new one to me today at 12:30.  I am happy.  I feel confident this new one will be just fine.

I'd rather by from local small dealer than a box store any day and now you know why.

---------------------------------------------------

So are you ready for this edition of Fun with Grandma?

Good news:  When I called to remind her I would be picking her up within the hour my uncle answered the phone. He said, "She informed me that you were picking her up."

Last week she couldn't remember.

The week before she cancelled her appointment because she didn't remember.

This week she knew!

At 9:40 I went over to pick her up and went in her house.  She was in the regular tizzy.  She went all out on her makeup and it looked good.  She had on an outfit that was quite fashionable for a 80's something woman.  I was totally impressed!  Especially considering I had on running shorts, an old tshirt and my sneakers.

As we were walking out I asked if she had her keys, "Yep!" she said.

I locked the door.  I turn and see her fumbling through her purse.  No keys.

One would think I would have a set for her house....one would think.  No, I do not.  I just don't.  That's her kids deal and I don't want a key unless they are not around to take care of her.

Also....she keeps her house locked up like Ft. Knox.  I'm not kidding.  To get into her actual home you go through three locked doors.  They're probably also fireproof and secretly require biomarker readers for the lock to turn.  This is part of dementia...paranoia.  To be honest, if someone wanted to get in to steal her pile of underware turned dust cloths they would wear themselves out trying to get through the doors.

A call to my aunt saved the day and off we went.

Today my grandmother was happy.  She noticed all the blooming pear, dogwood, forsythia (or yellow bells), tulips, late blooming buttercups, etc.  Her comments were all in line with "normal" and it made for a good change for our weekly drive.

I dropped her off at the door of her beautician's.  Then I pulled out the stroller and the baby and I took to our 3.5 mile stroll at a vigorous leisurely pace.

Lunch today was Wendy's.  I love Wendy's.  It was a good choice made by me.  My grandma doesn't remember any restaurants so when I mentioned Wendy's I had to go over their menu and good options with her.  She was miffed that I ordered chicken nuggets and a salad - "That's not enough food."  She ordered a chicken sandwich and salad - "That's too much food."

The fun demented moment of today came at the expense of our food.  My five year old even chimed in on this one.

Wendy's places their burgers in these paper boxes.  The burger or chicken sandwich in this case sits in it so it basically looks appeasing to the eye.  This box became the centerpiece of my grandmother's passion.

"I'm keeping this box.  Unless you want to keep it."

Do not laugh...do not laugh.

"You're what?"

"Keeping this box.  Look at it.  It is made so well and I could put things in it."

"We don't keep these.  Its paper and it has had food in it.  We will throw it away."

"No.  I will keep it.  Look at how well it is made.  It can hold treasures."

Who is talking my 80 something year old grandma or my five year old?

"No.  We don't keep these things.  You have plenty of boxes and baskets we'll go through those if you need a small one."

Then the five year old chimed in....."You can't keep that mom-o that's trash.  If you take trash in your house you'll have mice!"

My grandma said, "Well."

Score daughter!!!!!  Good job!

When we got back to her house she repeated over and over what a wonderful time she had had.  She never does that.  One for mom-o zero for dementia.

The cleaning race is on.  I've spent way more time outside than inside this week.  Here goes it.

I had a revelation.

4.10.13

Today a mom said goodbye to her son.
He wasn't moving out or going on a trip.
He wasn't going to school or to go work out.
He wasn't staying home while she went to work.

He was returning to his true home.

He left his spirit cart and ventured to eternity.

He was a teenage kid. He was a boy who battled cancer and lost an organ and a limb in the process.  He kept fighting though.  He fought til the end.  I imagine God reached down and said, "That's enough, son.  It is time to come with me."

--------------------------------------------------------

Once upon a time many moons ago when I was around 13 I babysat for a couple.  They had a preschool boy and I spent most weekends hanging out with him while they had date nights.  The mom was super nice.  The dad was a little wacko.  I'll never forget him running through the house screaming - "I had a revelation!  I had a revelation!"

This morning his words were in my ears -  I too had a revelation.

I was 65% complete with my workout when I received a text from my little brother that said one of his peers had passed away.  I didn't know the young man personally, I just knew him from all the attention he had recieved due to his cancer battle, I was a follower of his on Twitter, and I kept him in my prayers.

The text said he had died.  My eyes immediately went to my workout partner - my own son, 7 months old.  I experienced a pain in my heart and my gut.  For a moment I saw my son perhaps the same way that child's mom did many years ago when he was an infant.

My baby - full of happiness, learning, and joy.

My baby - he'll get all the best I can afford to give him.

My baby - he has a great future.

Then my revelation.

My baby - a gift to me with no guarantees.  I can only continue to pray that God keeps him heatlhy, safe, and cared for for all his days.

We don't see the forest for the trees sometimes because we are humans.  We think that since we sit at the top of the food chain and brain development hierarchy then we are destined to be fabulous and only get the best of the best.  We are quite snotty aren't we? We are quite foolish to think we're so untouchable.

Time to stop living in denial.

Time to start realizing we are just simple humans who in the grande scheme of life have little to no control over what our tomorrows hold.  Each breath we are given, our children are given, our friends are given is not a guarantee but a gift.  No one says you have to live to 85.  For some its 5 minutes, 5 days, 5 years, 17 years, 49 years, 109 years.

Today is the first day of a new view on life as it is.  Today is the day to rejoice in dirty diapers, 100's on spelling and biology tests, prom dresses, broke down trucks, leaky foundations, another grocery trip, a home run, a missed catch, a soccer kick, dance recitals, major declarations, a good doctor's visit, another anniversary, a best friend, an old acquaitance, life as it is.

I dare you.

Oldhouseprophen Please

4.9.13

Let me start off with one helluva good recipe.  This is a Weight Watcher's Recipe that I actually tweaked by mishap.  You can use jalapenos but they are omitted from mine because my husband and child would not have opened their palate to anything spicier than the taco packet.  To me this is reminiscent of a Mexican lasagna.  Its layered and delicious and sits up beautifully on the plate.

They call it - Mexican Casserole

You will need:

8 small corn tortillas (if you are allergic to corn then use wheat and if you are allergic to wheat I bet you have a nice tummy)

2-3 boneless skinless chicken breast cut into chunks or strips or shredded (however you prefer)

1 small can of corn

1 can of diced tomaotes (I used petite diced)

1 can of black beans

1 packet of taco seasoning (I used McCormick)

1 onion chopped

1 small container of fat free sour cream

1 bag of Mexican style shredded cheese (go low fat if you can find some)

On the stove top place the chicken and chopped onion in a large sautee pan.  Cook for about 12-14 minutes - until the chicken is cooked through.

Next throw in your corn, tomatoes, black beans and your taco seasoning packet.  Stir well, cover and simmer five minutes.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

In a 9x13 baking dish - spray with PAM and take your tortillas and cut them in half so that you have 16.  Take 8 of those bad boys and line the bottom of the dish - they can overlap it is encouraged.

Spoon out your chicken mixture - only half of it - on top of the tortillas.

Spoon your entire sour cream container and spread evenly on top of mixture.

Layer your remaining tortillas on top of the sour cream layer.

Spoon the rest of your chicken mixture on top of the tortillas.

Cover with cheese.

Bake at 350 for 20 minutes.

You can thank me later.

***The WW recipe calls for ground beef in place of chicken but I thawed out chicken so the change was made****

We all LOVED it!

Want a drink with it- duh margarita! Or
Dos Equis.

--------------------------------------------

Something I don't love is major repairs to a home.  The reason?  I hate spending money.

An issue with living in an old house, that has only had aesthetic updates over the years, is that it is a money pit to make it safe and happy again.  The current issue is our foundation/basement.  I just entertained a gentleman (who I find out after the visit is the president of the company) with my very limited knowledge of construction circa 1930.

He taught me a lot about how homes were built back in the day.  I also see how modern construction has made HUGE advancements.  Now I want to drink a Jack n Coke and hope and pray I will one day buy a winning lotto ticket so I can buy a house I am totally in love with.  I am falling out of love more and more with this one.  I keep thinking one day I'll desert this place and move to the coast and live in a cottage and work a job a la Nicholas Sparks novels and every night my husband and I will take long walks along the shoreline....wake up and nope here we are in the present!

He'll have my quote in a week.

--------

It is another blessed day in NC with blue skies, sunshine and temps of 80+ degrees.  All I can think about is water....water....water.
Reading to her little brother about birds while mommy saves the environment by line drying some linens.

The bichens are enjoying this weather with good production.  $2.50 per dozen inquire by commenting or sending a message.

Flopless in the Spring Time

4.8.13 Ahhh the sun

I think winter said goodbye last Thursday as it snowed, sleeted, and rained itself away.  Cold tears from the bleak season to tell us all - til we meet again (which will be sooner than you think).

This weekend was pure weather perfection.  It was short sleeve weather and by the time the dinner bell rang it was feeling more like short pants season (capri, clamdigger, bermuda, shorts, hot pants).  The sky was blue the sun was bright yellow and the butterflies, bees, and birds were all decorating the early blooming flowers and shrubs.  This is an NC April. God love it.

Saturday morning was a stressful, unhappy time for me.  The hubby was at work and the children were not cooperating.  Ok, the baby is obsolete from that comment.  The five year old doesn't have much in the line of chores to do.  Her main job is to make her bed and keep her room and playroom (a very loosely defined) tidy.  For the most part she does an OK job.  One part of keeping her room organized is keeping her dance stuff on the dance shelf and the soccer stuff on a soccer shelf.  This is apparently just too much to handle.

Saturday morning -

1.  She cannot find her shin guards.
2.  She cannot seem to put her soccer socks on.
3.  I cannot stop for five seconds to organize my thoughts.
4.  I needed to pack the baby's bag.
5.  I needed to pack the team snacks.

Evaulation -

1.  She isn't really looking for her shin guards - she's walking in a circle dazed and confused.  This is aggravating me.
2.  She throws a fit when I say - Just put on your socks.  She says she can't and throws them down and proceeds to pout.  This is making my blood pressure hit record numbers.
3.  My thoughts are starting to organize on why people should not have children and if they do they should never introduce them to any extracurricular until they can purchase the needed equipment themselves (and maybe that will help them keep up with it) and they can drive themselves to their practices and games.
4.  Baby bags - over them.  Sorry to all the millions of bag companies out there.
5.  The easiest part of the whole issue was the team snacks.  Open fridge, throw in waters.  Throw in snack cups and crackers.  POOF done.

Conclusion -

1.  I found her shin guards.
2.  I put her socks on her.
3.  My mind is now screaming - it is 8:55 and we're supposed to be at breakfast at 9:00 and its fifteen minutes away.
4.  Not even worried about the baby bag anymore and will be totally downsizing to make it relax me.
5.  Snacks are in the trunk.  Thank God I only have to bring them one time this season.

When we got to the soccer match my kid didn't want to warm up.  If anyone needs to warm up - its my kid.

During the third quarter she got hit in the face with the ball.  Way to not use your hands was my initial sentiment.  She wasn't bleeding or missing any pearly whites.  She did sit out half a quarter due to the fear the hit had inflicted in her.

The snacks were a hit.

On the way home she said - "I don't think I want to play soccer mom."

I knew what had triggered this.  The hit in the face.  I just took a deep breath and said - "That's ok but you are a part of a team and that means you don't quit.  You'll finish out this season and be done."

To which she replied - "Great.  I will have more time for gymnastics."

Wait, what?

----------------------------------------------

Anyone on Mirena?  I say that and I get sighs and eye rolls.  So many negative comments.  I must say my overall feeling on my new organ (well it isn't new anymore) is that its ok.  I like not having to worry about a medicine every day.  I have noticed a terrible side effect - for me, maybe not the majority - horribly bad PMS.

It normally last a day or two and it makes me the woman your mama warned you about.  I literally could poke your eyes out with my index and bird and then keep walking.  I also start to feel like I am trapped.  My husband forced me out on my own without any kids Saturday night.  Apparently, he didn't like my PMS playing style and said get off the court.  It is amazing what two hours alone can do for you.

It was all I needed.

I also got a pair of jeans (we can thank my regular workouts and food choices for the need for a smaller size) and a new bra.  Oh yeah ----- so happy!  A good bra can make you a different woman.  When it is pretty it just adds to the joy.

----------------------------------------

In college I had a great closet.  It was massive.  I mean seriously it was probably the size of your kitchen.  It was great!!!  I miss it.  It had loads of shelving and racks.  In that closet was a lot of college girl clothes - trendy, fun, made for someone who never had grown a kid in the area of the abdomen.  There was also a plethra of flip flops.  Rainbow, Old Navy, Adidas, then the various "dressy" flops.  I remember at one point I had thirty-six pair.  I wore them during each season.  I loved them.  They rocked out.

As I got a little older my flip flop stash began a decline.

I now have....zero pair of flip flops.

I think that right there is a cry for help.

I had some Rafters but over the weekend they disappeared.  I am searching for them - high and low.  They were so comfy and cool and awesome and mine.

Now they are missing.

There is something so sad as realizing your shoes now consist of black dress shoes, boat shoes and your trusty running shoes.  Where is the fun?

Well, don't cry for me Argentina - I will be fixing the flip flop problem in about four days.

Swingsets, slides, and simple fun

4.5.13 Spring Break is closing up shop.

Another week is wrapping up.  These weeks seem to pass at an extremely high speed for me.

Last night I made a new recipe and it was a total disaster.  Asian Beef Stir Fry is not something for my palate or my kitchen.  It smelled delicious it sauteed on the stove top.  It tasted mediocre.  My little doggie enjoyed the majority of it for his dinner.  The kid got a PB&J and the husband was on a fend for yourself mode (aka he didn't eat anything because if it it means he has to whip up something for himself he just goes without....have I mentioned I feel like he will die of a metabolic disease or heart disease?).

Have you ever made a dish and though "never ever again"..........

When we were newlyweds I found this recipe for a casserole.  It was meat, cheese and veggies.  As I was making it I started thinking - Oh God this is not good!  It called for about three cannisters of salt and seventeen bags of frozen peas.....ok that may be an overshot but it was disgusting.  I refused to eat it but my husband powered through slow bite after slow bite.  I remember bursting into laughter and saying STOP EATING IT!

We ordered a pizza.

Fun stuff.

------------------------------

I am enjoying my little girl's singing to Miranda Lambert's new song Mama's Broken Heart.

----------------------------

My little fella is really hitting some milestones.  He crawls all around in that army-esque body drag.  He goes from that stance to sitting up on his own.  It amazes me his speed as he goes from one room to another.  I think my babyproofing is ok for now.  I still feel like the hawk watching the mouse as I follow him from room to room.  I'm always ready to scoop him up from the heat vent - twenty five times in three minutes.

Part of me is excited as he starts toying with the idea of grabbing on to the ottoman to pull on up.  The other part of me is saying - no, not yet.  He's my last itty bitty and therefore is expected to grow a bit slower than his big sister.  Or rather, and therefore is expected to grow at quadruple her rate.

I have noticed some differences between my baby girl and my baby boy.  She was very independent and ready to do everything on her own.  This little guy, well not so much.  She took her bottle from me and fed herself.  He will take it for a few seconds and then realize he's holding it on his own and drop it.  That's ok....I'll take it.  He is my last itty bitty.

-----------------------------

This weekend has a to do list for me.  What about you?

My task this weekend is to pressure wash and stain the swingset/fort in the backyard.  The baby has a swing but the little lady's swing needs to be replaced.  She wants a tire swing.  I love tire swings.  They are perfect for one, two or three.  They twist around really well.  They're just fun.

If you have the availability and you have a kid or twelve you should invest in a play area in the back yard, front yard, or side yard.  Kids need to be outside - they need fresh air, sunshine, dirt, imagination.  They need the Vitamin D.  Grass stains are an importan color of childhood as is sweaty hair, and staring at bumble bees, birds and butterflies.

They are a great piece of play for playdates and a fun place for picnics.  They don't dirty or clutter up your livingroom.

The best part - you can pull up a lawn chair and sip some lemonade and watch them play.  You can go down the slide a few times.  You can read a book on a blanket while you catch a few rays.  You can plant your garden or your flowers.  See, everyone wins.

-----------------------------------------

I hope you guys have a terrific weekend in the sunshine.  I smell poop so I better go ahead and end this post here.

-----------------------------------------

Have a happy and healthy day -
