Friday Favorites....This week.

Momfessionals

Tomorrow is the birthday party!  I'm so excited to see friends I haven't seen in quite a while and enjoy the giggles of the littles in the backyard.  I'm also totally stoked about cake.  I love cake.

Ok guys here's my Friday 5 --- its a random hodge podge.

1.  You met Chippy (Ethel)

On Wednesday I introduced you to Chippy (Ethel)!!!  She's our new puggle.  Gosh, I love this dog.  Even more reason to love her?  She is my daughter's body guard.  Tuesday night I had showered and taken out my contacts and put my Coke bottle thick glasses on.  The dog has never seen me clean wearing glasses.  She was on my daughter's bed and I started walking towards her room.  Dear Chippy (Ethel) lunged from the bed barking and snarling at me.  Then she realized who I was and had a mild heart attack.  Just kidding.  Seriously, she did go into attack mode on my tail.  Lesson learned:  Don't mess with Chippy (Ethel) when she's with the kids....she'll eff you up.

2.  Recipes

I am so stoked to be trying out recipes and sharing them with you guys (on Tuesdays).  I really love cooking above and beyond the way a normal human being should.  I was mapping out September posts and the most excited I became was when I was looking at all the recipes.

3.  I cannot believe summer break is over

My daughter goes back to school on Monday.  Wow. I am totally ecstatic over that but also a little lost without her and her sassy self around.  It is odd not going to work (because I loved working in elementary school last year) hopefully before you know it I'll be busy making my substitute rounds.  I'm also sad that another speedy year is starting up. I know teachers don't feel that it is too speedy but for parents it is.  I was told that when my daughter started school the years would go faster.  Guys, that is so on target.  My baby is in first grade....ZOOM.

4.  I wish I had some money

I would love to get some new clothes for fall.  Oh wait I live in NC and that whole fall thing isn't a worry until maybe October...ok seriously November.  One of my new fave bloggers {Lisa Loves John} posted some cute ideas for outfits for fall when fall is a gazillion degrees...loved them all.  Link above.

My guy in May 2013....love this picture of my chunky baby boy.  He's turning two on Sunday!

5.  My boy

On Sunday my son will be two years old.  He's my last baby and he's my heart.  The speed at which he is growing and learning is amazing.  He makes me laugh and sometimes want to scream simaltaneously.  He's a total blessing.  He's made us all better from dad to mom to big sister.  Thank you God for my sweet boy.  Please always keep him healthy and safe.

Have a fabulous weekend.

Birthday Boy Week: I don't go crazy

{Via}

Though sometimes I do go crazy (because I'm a wife and mom and at home a lot) I do not go crazy over birthdays.

I'm such an atypical blogger.

I see bloggy friends who have these HUGE bashes for their kid's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 13th, 54th birthdays.

That's just not how I roll.

Last year - good cake.

Don't get me wrong I like a good birthday celebration but to me that's a yummy cake and some good champagne.  Champagne at a kid's part is a little necessary not necessary though haha.

Kids are simple (unless you groom them otherwise) and I prefer embracing that simplicity.

This weekend my Little Man turns two.  Yes, its hard to believe he'll be two years old; yes, I think his babyhood flew by at great speed and yes it is a bit sad.  In a week and a half my daughter will turn lucky number seven.  Am I baffled at that mere turn of another calendar year?  Yes, it scares me.  At the speed this is all happening it looks like I'll be picking out my retirement trailer in T minus twenty.

I love retro pics...sorry not sorry.

The coolest part, for me, about birthday time, is I realize neither of my kids care about decorations or photo booths or having a $450 blow away bouncy house here.  They are into their friends, good food, giggles, and running around screaming.  That's the perk of birthdays....lots of giggling and screaming because you're a little kid and you can do it and not get strange looks or a police cruiser to ride in.

I guess that's why our party (which will be mainly family with some wonderful friends coming too) will consist of hot dogs and fixings, cake, and the toys in the back yard for entertainment.

It may not be pin worthy but it will be a good time centered around a cute little birthday boy and his soon to turn seven sister.

Introducing: Chippy!

My husband and I had been discussing it for quite a while.  We wanted a dog for the kids.  We'd had doggies before and now was good timing to add to the family four legs.

We also decided it would be the "big" birthday present for the kids.  My son's birthday is this coming weekend and my daughter's is a week and a half after.  Our little girl had been asking for a dog and she's at the age where she's learning responsibility a little more than before.  Our son is just animal crazy.

So after multiple attempts at locating the perfect doggie (shelters, private breeders, etc) we just so happened to stumble upon a Puggle on Facebook.  She was the age we were looking for and practically made for us.  Housebroken and from a great home, clean and friendly, and adoring of children.

We've had her almost a week and boy have things been great with her around!  She likes the kids and tolerates them so well, is so low maintenance, and is the perfect piece to the puzzle that is our family.

Yay for birthdays, yay for kids and dogs, yay for doggies, yay for Chippy!

And to be honest I've been trying to train her to the name Ethel....

Tested, Tasted, Totally Delicious: Ground Turkey Burrito Bowls

Good morning or evening loves.

I hope your week is going well so far!  Today's post is another great recipe from Pinterest that I tried and the entire family gobbled up.

Around here I make a menu plan for the week generally the Wednesday before the week starts.  I take inventory of what is on hand and what is on special at the grocery stores.  Then I plan away.  This helps save money...big time!

One thing I hate is eating the same main course every night of the week.  By this I mean eating chicken back to back nights.  We eat a lot of chicken but I have to stagger the nights we have it.  Otherwise, we'd all be burned out on the yard bird.

When I decided to try this recipe we had already had chicken the night prior to me making this dish.  I decided, after reviewing the recipe, I would not use chicken in this dish but instead Ground Turkey.

Great decision!  I followed the recipe to a tee and I treated my ground turkey as I would the chicken the recipe calls for.  However, since its ground meat I didn't add any oil to cook it in I let it cook with the onions ONLY AFTER the onions had cooked in the dash of EVOO for a good four minutes.

This recipe is probably amazing with chicken as well and I'm sure next time I'll go ahead and make it with that just to have two options available to me.

See, its fun to play with your food!

This recipe is from the blog No. 2 Pencil - I love this blog!  Great food and great ideas.  Enjoy!

Wondering if you could make this tonight?  Here's what you need:

1 can of black beans
1 can of diced tomatoes
EVOO
1 onion chopped
2 1/2 cups of reduced sodium chicken broth
Chicken breast or ground turkey
Cumin
Chili Powder
Garlic powder
Salt & Pepper
Monterrey Jack Shredded Cheese or a Colby Jack Mix Shredded Cheese

Birthday Boy Week: I'm making a cake?!

If you follow the blog you know I LOVE COOKING!

I do not, however, love baking.

There are certain times a year that I don't mind baking (generally October-December) but I'm not really into it January-September.

Why do I not like baking?

Basically because you have to make it really pretty (cakes) and there isn't much lee way in doing so.  If I bake a cake I get one shot to ice it right and if I ice it wrong I'm screwed.

Whereas, when I cook a meal I can make it beautiful by the layout I put it on the plate.

Laziness level "I ain't baking no damn cake"

Get me?

So this year to save money I decided to bake the birthday cake for my son.

Just an FYI, since my kids are two weeks apart they share one general party, so yes you'll see my daughter's influence on the celebration as well.

Can I just say I'm scared senseless at making this cake?

I've looked to Pinterest for ideas:

When I typed in easy farm birthday cake I got this

Party Animals Create a barnyard bash with this quick and easy creation. Cover the cake in green buttercream frosting and pipe the fence on the sides.
If this tickles your fancy click here
Hello....I'm not a baker.  I don't know the FIRST THING about fondant!

So, I scroll down in hopes the easy is around the bottom...

Construction farm tractor cake. Chocolate icing crunched up Oreos and graham crackers. Starburst and dot cones. Delicious and cute and easy!
You can pin this here

Oh my.  No that looks like something I could totally do because it looks like a mess!

So, as I'm about to give up I find this:

Farm/Tractor Birthday Party Ideas | Photo 3 of 14 | Catch My Party
Pin it and check out Catch My Party!

How fabulous is that?  No fondant, no crazy elements that scare me.  A tractor, some chocolate, and candles.  I think this must be perfecto!

Then I had to take a trip to get a few things at Walmart and I just so happened walked by the bakery and maybe I just so happened to look in their cake book.  Possibly I asked the price of a particular cake.  It could be that I went back to the baking section and started pricing out how much it would be for me to make the same cake.  It could have went through my mind that the cake would be a horrid mess if I tried to make it.  Perhaps, I walked back to the bakery and struck up a conversation with the baker and she may have taken my name and number and said I could pick up my cake the morning of the party...

Share something you've baked and you were impressed with....or better yet NOT impressed with!

Back To School Score!

This is the last week of summer break for my baby girl.  She enters first grade next week.  Ya know first grade is like real school....no more baby.  Nosiree she's a big kid for real now.  We're talking a kid who likes iCarly and the not so sweet cartoons.  She's jamming out to Taylor Swift and saying stuff like, "Ok I'm going to be the teenager and you're going to be the little kid."

I'm left going, huh?

Can I tell you I am truly blessed I have a child who loves school?  Seriously, she cried when it was out.  Then she found out she could attend a three week camp at her school and was thrilled to pieces.

This...from a kid whose parents hated school and wanted to leave early every chance they got and cried when summer break was over.

I guess its pointless to tell you that prepping for the school year isn't a toughie around here.

You know what else isn't a toughie?  Using Amazon to get awesome deals on your school needs.

I had a friend who battled the mall on a Back To School themed weekend.  I couldn't do it.  I'd be locked up for screaming at someone for being rude.  Two negatives make a positive right, Algebra teachers?

Right now Amazon is having some awesome deals for back to school....check them out. Thank me later!

Oh Hey Friday! An EXPENSIVE Week

Momfessionals

Happy Friday, Loves!  Let's do this in the link up fashion we all are accustomed to....

Photo: Last night hashtag depressing
My darling spouse in the well hole...well the hole to the top of the defunct well.

1.  Water

Guess what?  Water wells can malfunction especially when their 90 some years old.
Guess what else?  Ours did on Sunday night.
I am lost without water.

2.  Signing up for County Water Services.

So we decided: Let's just go the cheaper (errr) route and sign up for county water.  They sent out a crew and  put a meter in and hook us to the line.  Then my dad came out and hooked the link to the house and we're be good to go.  Let's all vomit at the cost just paid out to the county $1650.00.  I didn't mistype that.  Yeah, I wanted to puke and puke and puke.  (Or at least make puke faces for a few days...years.)

3.   Water Changes Everything

By Tuesday afternoon we had water!  Oh how nice it is to have water.  I flushed the toilets!  I washed my hands!  Woo hoo!  Those are awesome things to do!  Next up...mopping!  Seriously?  I spent Tuesday night cleaning like a made woman.  After I finished up around 12:30 AM I realized that....I didn't need a lot of water for what I did.

So now I am Earth Mama!

Sorry guys my photo editing really blows on this one...you see what it is ok?

4.  Birthdays Ahead

This weekend we're just chilling out.  We had an invite to the beach but after spending two arms and three legs on water (I'm sick of typing the word as much as you are reading it) we'll be laying low around the house.  We'll also be prepping for the birthday party that will be going on next week.  (Do you smell birthday cake posts?)

5.  But in it all I know that...
God is in control . . . even when you don't like what is happening in some areas of life!
