Tales from the pasture...

Monday - already?  Last week I had an extra day and a half off and boy did I enjoy that!  We won't talk about how it makes Monday that much more devastating to face (slam the alarm clock!)

I have a lot to fill you in on.

Last Monday was my daughter's first riding lesson.  Guys, she did awesome.  The trainer she is working with is simply amazing - a whisperer if you will.

My daughter had been extremely afraid after being thrown off Molly.  She wouldn't even touch a horse after that happened.  When Prissy Buns came to live in the pasture my little girl was still a nervous wreck. Though she did attempt to get back in the saddle she was overcome with fear. I'm not kidding when I say she was out just as quick as she was up.

Being her mom I'm somewhat (I think and hope) in tune with her and I could tell she wanted to ride.  There was the fear from having trusted an animal and it not-so-gently letting her down but there was also something in her actions around the same animal that said she wanted to do it.

She was just overcome by fear.

Last Monday I was nervous for my girl C. Lately I have noticed she is becoming less self confident and my mama heart was breaking.  Her excitement for the lesson was off the charts but in the back of my mind I worried she would panic and be in tears once she was faced with getting on the back of a horse again.

I didn't want my baby to be embarrassed.  I didn't want her to feel like she couldn't do this.

As moms we want to take sickness and pain from our babies.

We want to remove self doubt and raise them up as high as we can.

Too many times we think the cure is to surround them, coddle them, and give them no room of their own to try.  It isn't that we don't want them to try it is just that as moms we have a fear of their failure too.

Arriving at the ring we were surrounded by girls of all ages and all levels of riding.  I imagine for an eight year old girl who wants to ride so badly it was magical in a way; being surrounded by various horse breeds and girls who cold maneuver about with ease on these huge animals.

It was also overwhelming.

I could see the uneasiness building up in my girl.

Why couldn't I take it from her and give her all the self confidence she needs?

If you're not a mom then I'll let you in on a secret that will make you ever so successful anytime you deal with children for long periods of time.  Sometimes mamas need to ease away so that their kids can do their best.

I eased away.

While my girl was in the stable I was sitting out staring at an empty horse ring - saying little prayers that this would be a good experience.

To cut down on this post I want to share this with you -

There were tears.

There was fear.

There was shouting and crying.

Then there was a girl who told me a couple days before - "Mama I just want to be able to ride a horse and not be afraid," in the saddle - smiling, finally - and then out of the saddle and rubbing and talking to a horse that just a hour before she was shying away from.

On the way home the talking from the backseat was incessant.

That was so fun.  That horse is amazing!  Did you see me?  I cannot wait to go back.  I want to ride tomorrow.  Can you please ask if I can come back tomorrow?

We spend a lot of time worrying about our kids.  We want the school work to be perfect and their manners impeccable.  As moms we want their worlds to be without a crease, nick, or worry.  Our lives revolve around their lives.

But sometimes if we ease away a little bit - they do something amazing.

Spring Saturdays or Saturdaze!

Good morning/afternoon/evening, loves!

Admitting it, owning it, carrying it - I have been a bad blogger lately.  Life has been fun and relatively busy and that leaves no time to sit down at a computer and put together a post.  In a way that bums me out but in another way it makes me happy.

For me it is sure fire sign that we aren't in winter anymore!

I missed High Five for Friday <sad face> yesterday.  So today I'm following in Katie's footsteps and posting Six for Saturday for this past week.

*1*  Sundays
Last Sunday was fabulous.  The kids went to church with their grandparents while the hubby and I went out to breakfast, made a Lowes run, and worked around the house.  Sundays are quickly regaining the title Favorite Day of the Week from me.  The past few have been beautiful and filled with relaxed family time - two things you cannot beat!

*2*  Monday Lessons
My daughter started her horseback riding lessons this past Monday.  The trainer is a-freaking-mazing.  I really never expected C to get back on a horse again after her fall but after some time out in the ring with Ms. Linnea the child was in the saddle.  Mind you they didn't walk, trot, or really move but she was back in the saddle and by the end of her lesson not wanting to leave!  I look forward to seeing the progress next week.

*3*  Bike Rides
This week I was able to fit in a random bike ride with C.  I love riding my bike it makes me feel amazing and super young again.  Remember summers pedaling up and down and all around?  My bike was probably one of my best friends growing up.  It really breaks my heart to think that technology has taken over so much with the generations of today.  Operation Cut It Off is going to take effect here.

*4*  Dirt Therapy
Finally! This girl had her hands in the dirt this week.  I planted some petunia mix flowers in an oak barrel for our front flower bed.  In the next week or so there will be a lot more sowing and planting going on around here.  Keep reading.

*5*  Yard Sale Season
Who is excited about yard sale season?  THIS GIRL!  I absolutely adore going through people's stuff (in a very legal way meaning yard sales, garage sales, estate sales, tag sales, etc!)  This weekend seems to be the kick off for it all and I have already hit up a few.

*6*  Dirt
The video is the great segue into a post coming this week...not about death but about dirt.

Fashion 5 (Inspired by Pinterest!)

Hey loves!  The other night I was playing around on Pinterest (because that is what we do) and I typed in Spring Summer Fashion.  It immediately spurned this blog post.  The first five pins in my feed have now made it to my blog.  A little silly but hey it is a fashion post!

The Nightingale: Paolo Sebastian Spring/Summer 2015-16 Collection:
Wow I cannot wait to wear this to the grocery store!  Seriously, it is very intricate and does have that wow factor but um yeah. #thatsfunrightgrandma
You are missing out on life if you missed this fruitful post ;) Now on the blog is the amazing Watermelon Skirt!! MckennaBleu.com:
So this would be sweet for a five year old.  I just don't get the rage for women to wear clothing more appropriate for kindergartners.  Like LuLaRoe - heard of them?  I don't particularly think its cool for adults to sport Gymboree style clothing - I mean unicorns and you are 35?  I just can open a whole can of worms on that one....#theregoesthefunofit
This Dress is perfect for everyday wear but can also be dressed up for a cute night out with the girls.:
This is a dress.  Wait, what?  This barely is covering the goods.  Maybe I'm old or maybe I'm modest or maybe just maybe I'm not a hoochie.  Respect yourself. Give me another two inches of fabric and I'd be in love. #thiscomingfromagirlwhodoesnotwanttoshowoffthekitty
Spring Summer Fashion Trend Stripes Dress:
I really like this but I'm so afraid of thick horizontal stripes.  No matter what you think these do have the power to make you look double your size and for most women that isn't something we're going for.  The belted waist helps slim but hmm, I'm just not too sure.  #thoughtsofaselfconsciouschick
off the shoulder top. denim skirt. and those shoes. Hair tied up.:
I remember this look - this exact look from 1991. Oh and I had that skirt. #guessthatmakesmeold

Summer-itis

Admitting today that I really love spring!  But I really love spring when it actually sticks around and is a little on the warmer side!

This past weekend was beautiful but so terribly cold (for North Carolina!)  I believe we barely hit fifty on Saturday with wind gusts up to thirty miles an hour.  This girl cannot take that!

Sunday warmed up to fifty-nine with less wind and we were able to enjoy it.

But it got me thinking....

1.  I need to be wearing flip flops every day.

2.  My tank tops need to be worn and not under a sweatshirt.

3.  I should be enjoying warmer-ish evenings in the backyard under the stars.

4.  There should be more hands in the dirt and less hands getting warm air blown into them.

5.  Black dress pants should be neatly tucked away.

6.  Where is the lemonade?

7.  Sundays should mean river banks and not couch blankets.

8.  The heat should not be on.

9.  In all honesty, I should have already had my first sunburn of the year.

10.  I'm ready for school to be out.

Yes, I have summer-itis and it is only (barely) mid April.

Holy cucumbers.

How about you?

Tales From The Pasture...

Here's an update from this part of the world...

Molly left the pasture a couple weeks ago.  She returned to her original owner and I hear is doing fabulously!  Yay, Molly!

In her place a new girl has entered the pasture. Her name is Prissy Buns.  And once again we are faced with the challenge of having a horse that is for an intermediate rider in the pasture of a beginner rider.

And we're riding...

Prissy is a sweet girl who I have bonded with.  She just really doesn't want anyone on her back.  She wants ear scratches, rubs, brushes, and apples.  My favorite thing is that she gives you hugs for them.  Yes, my heart is slightly melted with this huge Quarter Horse.

Unfortunately, my daughter is scared of her.

You have to see everything as an opportunity to learn.  I'm using Prissy as an example of how to build a relationship of trust and love.  With more focus on becoming friends than saddling up that eight year old girl may learn a key concept to life.

You just never know.

Over the weekend we went to look at a paint horse named Joe.  This gelding melted her hearts and broke them at the same time.  He was obviously malnourished (we could see ribs and hip bones) and his feet were in horrible shape.  It unnerved me a bit.  OK more than a bit.

Joe needs a home badly and he needs food badly.  He has no pasture to graze and is only getting 2 cups of feed a day (or so we were told.)  I really want to find a rescue group to get this sweet boy out of his misery.

My husband and I wanted him badly but with our schedules there is no way we could give him the attention he needs.  Turning him out in the pasture would lead to foundering and that cannot happen on our watch.

If you are in our area (North Carolina) and interested in or knows someone who may be interested in this guy please email me at abrownieworldblog@gmail.com and we'll get the ball rolling.

Not the best picture but there they all are!

This weekend we spent a lot of time on the tractor prepping our land for this week's big event - grading our property!  The kids love it when the tractor is out and the hubby does too.

We roasted hotdogs and marshmallows by the fire on Sunday afternoon.

One of the best parts of the weekend?  An impromptu lunch with  my bestie and her family on Saturday!  We happened to both be in town and could meet up to eat pizza!

Did I take a picture - ugh no, stupid me.

So that's this week notes from the pasture.  Next week there will be more fun stuff to report and I cannot wait!

Let's have a great week!

H54F: The Week of Brrr

Greetings beauties!
Happy Friday to you!  We are having a pot luck lunch at work and I'm so excited to be totally, disgustingly unhealthy.  Seriously, it is a carb and sugar overload menu!

Here are my five...

carolina blue sky:

1.  Carolina Blue Sky

This is in no way a reference to the Tar Heels.  I am NOT a Tar Heel fan.  This is actually a true reference to my home and our beautiful skies this week!  It has been super cold but super gorgeous with sunshine and clear crisp skies.  I love it!

2.  Southern Charm

It is back!  I set my DVR to record it since I knew there was no way I would be able to watch it on Monday.  Tuesday evening while the kids were gone out with their step-grand I took full advantage of turning it on while I devoured dinner.  I'm so sick that Landon is back (did you see my Twitter?) and T. Rav is soooo gross.  Really?  You had to let Craig be in it again?  Can't we just have a Cam & Shep show?

3.  I actually opened a book!

I haven't had a desire to read at all.  Then I took a nice long shower and realized it was read or fall asleep to Peppa Pig.  So guys my nose is in an old Sophie Kinsella book - I have already read the entire Shoapholic Series and a few other books she has written so I'm good to go.

I was going to put up the video but it is so stupid with their hokey pokey white boy dancing that I was like - nope cannot do that.

4.  FL GA Line

If you a "liker" of my old Facebook Page (A Brownie World Blog) then you totally know I'm all about their song Confession.  This is a duo that I have hated for years and now in my old age I am like, "Well turn it up."

Take a second to think about how blessed you are. #quotes #SingersHnagout:

5.   Blessings in your face.

This week has been a constant reminder of amazing grace.  I've had several situations where I really see things I take for granted as completely immense blessings of grace on my life.  I can never be thankful enough and in a way that bugs me but then again it is awesome.  Every day is another day to say thank you and to see a simple miracle occur - one that we normally take for granted every single second.

The $#it Holes I've Stayed In....

Vacation season has started.  I've enjoyed all the pictures and posts on blogs, IG, FB, etc.  I really adore looking at vacay pics!

But it had me thinking about the trips of my childhood, college years, and earlier in my marriage.

Folks, I stayed in some major sh*t holes.  And today I want to share some of them with you!

Woo hoo.

So grab a cup of Mountain Dew or Aristocrat or PBR and let's get this rodeo started.

Ship Ahoy - North Myrtle Beach, SC 199?
So my first and maybe ONLY beach trip with my paternal side of my family happened in the 90's totally prior to 1995.  The ride down was in a Dodge Neon and I was sandwiched between two kids younger than myself.  Our accomodations were at the fabulous Ship Ahoy.

Cinder block walls, a pukey pink color with some navy accents.  Oh heck yes.

Ship Ahoy Motel, P. O. B. 216 Cherry Grove Beach South Carolina

The most recent photo of the place - bahahahaha - they shut her down a few years back.

Geez it was a dive.

The Teddy Bear
Cherokee, North Carolina 1995

I hate to admit this but I stayed there as a 13 year old child.  My mom and dad were home because my brother was to enter the world at any time.  Once again I was off with my paternal side of the family - hey they made for memorable vacations!  I always smile thinking of them.

The destination for this trip was Pigeon Forge not Cherokee but we stayed the night at this beautiful mountain side lush er place.

This place was horrible.  I know it is still open so maybe it is way better in 2016.  But whatever - the toilet was full of bugs, the mattresses had rat holes in them, and there was a bat in the room.  We were getting the nature feel inside this hell hole.

They did have a pool and it was neon green.  I figure it was radioactive or they used antifreeze to keep it flowing.

Surfside (Motor) Lodge
Carolina Beach, NC  2003 & 2010

Yes, you read that right.  One trip wasn't enough I had to go to a total dump twice.  The first time I was in college and we had all these intentions to go to Myrtle Beach - and we did - but we were bored and decided to just drive back up to NC and check in at this shadiest of shade places in Carolina Beach.

Yeah.  That is hot.  And super flammable.

The first trip there was that room - I'm pretty sure.  However, it had a 20 inch tv that was black and white picture only.  The shower hadn't been touched since 1970???  Oh it was bad but we got over it.

In 2010 it was a pure hell hole.  There were half naked children running around, people were leaving saucers of food out for ferrell cats - in the building - and the ferrell children were eating the food off the saucers.  The room was under a stairwell.  It stunk, I cried.

Eww.

The Rainbow Court Motel
Myrtle Beach, SC  2006

Well this one, yeah this one.

My bestie and I decided to take off for a weekend and we booked the cheapest room we could find.  We stayed drunk....just so we could sleep in that thing.

Between the biker guy (who probably had no actual home) who kept his bike on the walkway in front of our room, and the questionable owner (english not necessary to conduct business!) it was a true gem of poop.

Ugh look at the sign - Welcome Bac(teria) K.....we should have known!

I hope you laughed today while reading.

If you like any of these places then I'm sorry.
