Christmas 2015: Decorating

Holiday Decor:  I'm dreaming of....

I'll show some of my decorations in another post.  Today I want to dream about having a big, fat house and never having a budget and decorating like mad.

Christmas table centerpiece with mercury glass balls in vintage dough bowl:

This centerpiece is just perfect for Christmas and could be stretched out through the winter.  I love the lantern and anytime we can bring the outside in, I say do it!  Except when it is acorns!  After our October craft date my bestie had maggots surprise her from the real acorns we used!!! Note:  Bake your handpicked natural elements to insure you do not have bugs and critters as holiday guests!

50+ Latest Christmas Decorations 2015 | Christmas Celebrations:

I just love this whole set up.  If we weren't supporting the NC Ag Economy by purchasing a live tree each year I would totally be a white tree girl.  The elements of this that I love the most are the whites, silvers, and vintage flare.  Oh and any time a plant or four are involved I'm there!

Ah, one day ☺️ | Christmas Tree On The Barn:

I need a proper barn on my property.  Unfortunately, it didn't come with this side of the road!  How perfect is this?  It is simple but so fun and I think it screams - CELEBRATE!  If you have a barn please do this for me and send a picture!

10 Inexpensive Ways Of Decorating Your Home For The Holiday Season:

This mantel just wowed me.  Its so clean and fresh and inviting.  And lets face it I have small children I cannot pull off white anything for another 10-15 years!

How one blogger combined rustic and glam decorating ideas to deck her home for the holidays.:

This makes me yearn for a proper dining room!  I so love to host but am limited on space.  If I weren't....yes, this would be it!  Maybe in my next home!

So what decor are you dreaming of this season?  How is your home coming together?  I'm sure it is beautiful!

Thankful 23-30

Finalizing...

23 - Wednesday Nights...because they mean tacos, couch cuddles, and fun television for an hour with my kids.  I'm not a sit down and watch television mama but for some reason every Wednesday I find myself plopped with two of the cutest crumb crushers on my lap and by my side.

24 - Pull Ups...there is joy in knowing they were created so I don't have to wash sheets every single day.

25 - Remembering how I was as a kid....my daughter's current choice of clothing has me gritting my teeth.  I remember a phase where all I wore was terrible oversized t-shirts and gym shorts.  This too shall pass.  Always being able to remember a phase through reliving it on the other side and remembering I made it out semi unscathed makes me feel better!

26 - Good teenagers...you know the kind:  smart, funny, can conversate, responsible.  They are a HUGE blessing.

27 - Email...without it how would my bestie and I survive?

28 - Cabernet on the back porch at night...even when it is cold out.  There is something nice about that adult moment when the world is at peace and you can sip and look up and know everything is OK.  Even in a world where the unimaginable is now animated it is nice to know, in that moment, everything is going to be just fine.

29 - Faith...I don't see how people can live without it.  It carried, will carry, and currently carries us over every wave.

30 - Opening our eyes in the morning....the biggest gift that is not promised us.  Celebrate it every single day you are given.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all.  May your day be filled with a plethora of gifts, a table of warm food, a hundred hugs, a millions laughs, and leave you smiling for months to come.

Pass the pie.

Survival Tips for Chaotic Holiday Times

Oh what fun it is to admit the holidays are insane.  I have compiled a list of tips from my house to yours on coping with the holidays effectively and in a fun way.  I hope you will enjoy this read and share it for fun.  XO sweeties!

1.  Thank you for being a friend...

There is nothing in this world like having a best girlfriend.  It is especially true at this time of the year.  I can recall a time not so long ago (the past weekend) when all I wanted was some adult interaction.  My husband's work schedule leaves us a tiny window of time to effectively communicate the "meat and taters" of life let alone just gab and laugh.  This is where my best girlfriend comes in.  Over the weekend we were to have a phone date.  To say I needed this phone date is/was/will be a complete understatement.  I was going on day six of being a married single mom.  The morning had been tedious, the afternoon was a blur, and the evening was fun but man oh man did I crave an adult conversation!  The time came for our phone date, after the kids were nestled all snug in their beds (or after the sugar high and worn them down and they were drooling on themselves asleep with eyes open, it happens.)  I rang her up and got...voicemail.  Shot to the heart and you’re to blame.  The poor thing had had a busy day with her two boys and her husband just let her snore (she may kill me for sharing that) where she was.
Two days later we got that phone date.  In the midst of her getting off work and getting kids in the house, a dog walked, and referring a candy incident - we had a fabulous conversation!  One of those only us girls can have - serious, gross and left in giggles.
The key to survival in any season is a good BFF girlfriend who you can dial up and vent to and then be left laughing until your mom bladder has you peeing yourself.  It helps if she is in the same mommy boat or single boat as yourself as you will connect in just the right way.  If you do not have one of these precious gems then we need to talk and get that fixed immediately.

2.  Bourbon...

This is not the part of the post where I post of the joys of alcoholism.  Negative on this being where I tell you to put it on the binky when you have hit your breaking point either.  Indeed, this is where I share with you that at some point you will be so high strung and tight that you will need a tiny release.  Since I do not condone the use of illegal narcotics or your grandma’s stash of loopy controllers I will share that the one thing that will loosen me up is bourbon and some Coca-Cola.  I don't do this first thing in the morning but in the evening when you've had your fill of screaming kids, braggy-beotches, and the mountain of work that hasn't been accomplished - pour yourself about two fingers and some soda and unwind.  (But just one....this isn't Christmas Eve.)  If you have an aversion to spirits then crack open um…well…grape juice or something.

3.  Delilah....

You think you have problems?  Figure out what your local dentist chair music station is and turn it on after 7 PM and listen to the Delilah show.)  You're totally good, I promise.

4. Water...

I loosened you up with bourbon and now I turn the tables on you.  Truth be told we should all be in a state of pancreas strike during this time of year.  If you want to feel better then drink a lot of water.  With all the holiday foods (salty ones, sweet ones, high protein, higher fat) we need to ingest a whole lot of water.  And no, you don't have to put lemon in it, good Lord.

5.  Messy Activities...
Admitting I am a pretty A type person but I have B type tendencies in this DNA structure (seriously, how many letters can I use?)  This is that time of year when you need to let your B tendencies run freely.  My kids have the best time with paint (acrylic).  I buy some canvases (on sale extra cheap right now) and pull out my paint, cover the island with towels or paper and let them set their inner Van Gogh free.  You know what happens right?  I join in.  I fail to stress about the paint on my son's face, I don't go crazy over my daughter's lack of attention to detail, we just sit around and make masterpieces and have fun.  Here's the deal:  These are the moments I remember from being a kid - making a mess that did not get a standing yelling session because we were all having fun.

It should be known that these days I survive on coffee and play doh. I don’t get why parents freak out over Play Doh?  Keep it off the freaking carpet and on the table and supervise a little and you’re golden. Buy a few cans of the stuff and put the kids into a realm of sculpting.  They will have oodles of fun and their brains will grow and you'll get a break to do something like...laundry.  (Refer to number two for a better idea.)

6.  Gift yourself...

This isn't putting a bow on your person and being awkward.  You are an important individual who has a lot to do but that doesn't mean every second of every day has to be doing work.  If you work outside of the home then for the love of God take the toilet cleaning gloves off.  If you work inside the home then, well, do the same.  You like to read?  Then do it.  I promise I have talked to the good fairy and she said she will not cause your walls to break away from your home and crumble if you sit your butt down and read, paint, knit, watch Lifetime, do a Sudoku puzzle, paint your nails, shave your legs, catch a cat nap, eat Oreos, color in that “adult” coloring book (which I have issues with) or whatever.  So do it and make a point to carve out a good thirty minutes every evening or day time to do it.  It is a gift to you, take it!

7.  Evade debt....

Can I get an amen that we live in a society that is so materialistic we have made ourselves shopping stupid?  I hate to think we will see the day when oxygen gets branded.  Coach bags, Ugg boots, Under Armor thongs...give me a break.  If you have scads of cash to blow or no fear of the magic swipe then go ahead do your thing (and email me for a list of things I'd like to have but really don't need.)  But if you're sitting there at 1 AM looking at your bank statement and your shopping list then listen up...channel yourself.  Do you know how many people on your list do not want another blah blah to sit on a shelf and gather dust or hang in a closet never to be placed on yourself?  I'm calling for a socks and underwear revolution...just kidding.  I am calling for a self-check - a reality check too.  So many people are insanely talented with crafting, arts, baking, cooking and yet they think they need to go blow a load (bad choice of words, maybe it is the bourbon, oops).  Get crafty with your niche and make something awesome.  If you still think you're not doing enough throw in a slight gift card.  Gifts are fun and all that but remember....it is the thought that counts and sometimes just being in the presence of your loved ones and friends is enough.  OK, sometimes.

8.  Dress pretty...

Some people get to get all dolled up for multiple events for the season and some of us don't.  This can be a fancy time of the year and I read studies where the majority of women like to get dressed up because it makes them feel more confident.  If you're stressed then maybe you need to take an extra fifteen minutes and put on more than concealer.  That "dressy" sweater you bought needs to worn.  Those diamond earrings need to be in your ears.  It doesn't matter if you're going to the post office, Walmart, McDonald's, or to get gas.  Take some time, dress pretty, make people wonder where that hottie is going.  (Don't take that as meaning you dress like a skank hoe.)

9. Re-eval your calendar...

If you're one of those people who have a full calendar of crap then maybe you need to have an intervention re-evaluation of all those pen and pencil marks.  Believe it or not you're not mandated to attend every single event you are invited to.  You also do not have to decide to try out for volunteer of the year in the 12th month of said year.  Running yourself ragged when it is unnecessary can be a huge road block to happy holidays.  Take time (after you read this post preferably) to look at what all you have going on and decide what you really want to attend and what you really want to skip.  Then do like your great aunt Nike said - just do it.  As in RSVP: I'm so sorry.  This time of year is busy and it is short cut the crap; create more time for things you really want to do.

10.  It is short...
I just said that twice.  In college if a professor said something twice that meant it was important and you better remember it for 16 weeks. This time of year is a mere blippit on the radar of a calendar year.  Yet it is the most memorable time of the year every year.  This is when we remember big things that happened in the 11 months prior and embrace some sort of change.  Maybe you got married this year and this is the first Christmas as a spouse.  Maybe you had a kid, well Merry Christmas Parent!  Maybe you lost a loved one; that sucks and hurts.  Maybe you moved away, won the lottery, got some bad news, or some great news.  This season is impacted by the changes we faced over the year. Changes are reflected in every photo, video, get together, decoration, party, gathering, etc.  This is the time of year when our senses are heightened along with our emotions.  Your kids will grind your nerves, break your heart, and then leave you standing in a puddle of tears of happiness.  Your loved ones will drive you to the brink of four fingers of bourbon with no coke.  The get-togethers will be funnier and sometimes a little difficult. Love will be sweeter.  The downside: we will all be a year farther into this game of life and even farther removed from the ages of our youth.  Enjoy every single second of every single moment.  You will never get this 2015 holiday season again.  Savor, enjoy, and relax.

A Festive Bucket of List

Wednesdays are reserved for This Weekend in North Carolina.  Since it is a holiday weekend I am not posting the traditional NC post but our Christmas bucket list.  You'll notice it has a few awesome NC Christmas-esque events that you could fit into your calendar if you're local!

*Christmas Season Bucket List 2015*

McAddenville, North Carolina

Visit the Festival of Lights – We live incredibly close to the Tanglewood Festival of Lights, one of the largest Christmas lights shows in North Carolina.  I am not a huge fan of this event but I am a fan of the way it makes my children’s eyes light up.  Our son has never been so this year we’re going J

Visit Old Salem and participate in the candle light tour- Another very local to us attraction is OldSalem.  If you aren’t familiar with it then it is the settlement of the Moravians who formed the area of Salem many, many years prior to Winston joining Salem to become Winston-Salem (home of Wake Forest University, Krispy Kreme, Lowes Foods, the late Maya Angelou, and so much more businesses, arts, and people.)  I have been to Old Salem but never during the Christmas season.  I feel like my daughter would love this!

Visit McAddenville –  This may not happen.  So there is a tiny little town in North Carolina called McAddenville and they are known for their Christmas lights.  I think it would be super fun to grab dinner and drive or walk through.

Visit Santa –  We do this every year J I realize my years of my daughter “really believing” are super numbered so I want to take advantage of all the Santa pictures I can get!  Typically, we visit a dilapidated old mall in Statesville to see Santa Claus.  Maybe this year we’ll catch him elsewhere!

Go to a movie –  My daughter has been going to movies since she was barely two years old.  My son has yet to attend a movie in a theater.  With some great films on the horizon I’m thinking Christmas break, maybe after the Christmas holiday, would be a great time to go see The Good Dinosaur?  This could be a great date with my bestie and her boys! They have a cheap theater where they live.  A first time movie goer at the ripe age of three may need a cheaper ticket <wink>.

Host friends for a cookie swap- This could be code for drink wine, eat chocolate, and gab with friends.  It could also be code for a girl’s only event and we bake like Betty Crocker (and drink wine and gab.)  It could also mean we all hang out in the backyard around a fire and have a white elephant gift game go on.  I tell you I am full of ideas.

Have a craft date – Do I really need to say more?  This year I’m making gift baskets for gifts and I’m hoping to put some of the projects I have been working on in them.  A craft date would really help me out on this…(ahem, Ashley!)

Enjoy an adult’s only dinner out –  Every season my husband and I go out for dinner and then Christmas shop for the kids.  I love this tradition.  Maybe this year we could invite some other couples to join us for dinner, drinks and shopping?

Drive through our church’s nativity –  Last year our church started a live drive thru nativity that also spans the life of Jesus Christ.  Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t great and we missed it.  This year we will attend!

Make NYE plans & carry them out -  Since we have been married we have never done anything for NYE other than meet another couple out for dinner.  This year I would love to secure a sitter and actually do something fun.

Happy Thanksgiving, friends!  I wish you a safe and happy holiday weekend.  We'll see you in December!

I am linked up with the ladies over at Tuesday Talk!

Weekending: The one before Thanksgiving!

Another weekend in the books!

Friday...

Park time, a bit of grocery shopping, cookie baking, and the kids watched Looney Tunes while I did some house work.

Saturday...

An early start to participate in the GO FAR (Go Out For A Run) 5k.  Clearly my daughter is not a runner of any type.
A Starbucks run...
Lunch with my brother...
Did someone mention Christmas shopping?  I started and did well.  The kids went along with me and they did great.
Chicfila for dinner, yes!
Home to paint on canvas.

Sunday...

Kids to church with my mom!
Finished up all the Downton seasons (sad).
I did a thorough "go through" of the kitchen and then....

A little Christmas here and there!

Now we're at the start of a wonderful holiday week.  Yay!  I love Thanksgiving so much.  The blog will be semi busy so I hope you will check it out.

Hugs friends, I'm thankful for each and every one of you!

Thankful 16-22

Resuming...

16 - A helpful family...I seriously do not see how people can live away from their families when they have small children.  With our chaotic schedule I really would be an epic life fail if I did not have the help of my mom, aunt, and step-mother-in-law with our kids.  I'm so incredibly grateful that my cards were stacked against the way I wanted them to fall and I'm close to my family for their amazing help with and love for our kids.

17 - Stupid books...The shallow reads that are super easy to fall into for a few minutes and escape the every day.

18 - Honey toast & hot green tea...My go to breakfast since we got back from Asheville.  Good honey makes your life better and hot green tea makes your life healthier so why not.  I like it in the morning before anyone is up and I can just sit and focus on what really matters and not stress out.

19 - Education...This is loaded so hold on.  I feel like I should say I'm grateful for a life where education was valued and I had ample help with the struggles (math) and was always pushed to go farther (though if not so stubborn I would have went a totally different way.)  As I get a little older I see more people who came from families that did not value education and I cringe.  Then I worry about them and the circle they are apart of.  Are they not valuing education for their offspring because of their nurturing?  It really worries me that we could be a society of more dimwits that did not have to be dimwits.  So with that being said I'm glad that my mom (and my dad at times) was a supporter of education and making sure I received a pretty good one!

20 - This working body...FYI you twenty somethings and early thirty somethings - your body is going to feel really weird by the time you hit these mid 30 years.  For the first time in my life I can get up from a chair and be stiff.  Parts of me crack and creek now.  I'm seeing a little bit of turgor disappearing here and there.  It drives me freaking nuts.  But guess what?  I can still move, I can still push myself to goals, I am not stuck in anything.  What a blessing!

21 - My daughter's humor...eight is a colorful age.  Some days my child is a version of an emo character and I just want her to stay away!  But most days she's hilarious, tall blonde who says the craziest stuff just to see you laugh.  I hope she keeps that trait.

22 - "I want to sit in your lap"...my son's big phrase now when he is tired or just wants his mama.  He'll come to me and tilt his head all the way back and tell me he wants to sit in my lap.  Normally its preceeded with c'mon mom.  He's so precious.

Blog Recap 11.16.15-11.21.15

I'm really hoping you are warm and cozy with a cup of whatever as you read this.  See, I'm probably not.  I'm out at a 5K with my daughter and her friends for the morning.  We're celebrating their running club with their first 5K - the Turkey Derby.  Prayers please LOL!

Here's the past week on the blog:

Last weekend was nothing exciting.  But I recapped it anyway!

Tuesday I introduced my new Let's Eat.  No more of me listing what we're eating.  Instead I'm picking a food theme and running with it.  This week I shared Thanksgiving side dishes.  It is potluck season so why not?

What's Happening This Weekend in North Carolina?A whole lotta holiday is truly what is up.  This is a longer post with TONS of events.  Click here to find out more from Wednesday's post!

Thursday I was all festive again with some beautiful tablescapes for Thanksgiving.  Needless to say I'm not going all out this year but I have some great ideas for next year!  I also posted some of my favorite Thanksgiving looks in Fall Fashion #5.

High fives all around for the end of the work week on Friday!

See ya later, gators!

H54F

Cup

Hello, hello!  It's been a busy week of work and well more work.  That's alright with me.  Here's my five things from the past seven days to share :)

Obviously not my photo (thanks Stock) but you get the idea!

1.  Fall Cleaning
Last Sunday evening, while the kids were at church, my husband and I started some cleaning.  Not in the house but in the garage that used to sit beside our house and now sits beside our house (roughly 75 yards now).  The garage is a catch all and has had empty boxes taking up too much space for a year now.  We set them ablaze in the area that was formerly our kitchen.  (She said what?)  Well had the house not had its little issue then the spot we burned boxes and an old wooden play set in would have been our kitchen.
On Monday we went through the remainder of items that were sitting in the middle and corners of the building.  Needless to say that job did not get completed!  Today my plan was to start working on cleaning out more items from that building and from the old store.
Old store?  Yes, my great grandfather operated a general store for our area way, way back in the day.  We (my grandma) still have the store (closed) and it has some items that need to be sold in it (nothing old, its my Christmas stuff, toys, etc).  Let's hope I do get some time to do that...eeek!

2.  Friendsgiving 2015
Ooohh I'm excited.  I'm also hugely thankful for Facebook for helping me keep this event all organized.  Pretty much everyone is communicating really well through the event page.  This week I let everyone know our entree would be pork loin and asked if they wouldn't mind sharing the side(s) they would be bringing so we wouldn't have redundancies.  Can I tell you my mouth is watering?
I cannot wait, I'm so ready to DIG IN!

3.  Weather Sneak Peeks
You know having the monthly forecast at your fingertips is a blessing and a curse.  Right now the projected high for Boone (where we spend Thanksgiving) is 44 degrees.  To be honest, I do not mind the colder temps on Thanksgiving.  It just makes it more festive.  Last year it was bitterly cold and the tree farm had a good 8 inches of snow with more falling as we scoured the mountain for our tree.  Who am I kidding?  We didn't go all over the mountain but instead decided to check right behind the little barn they base the sales out of!  I guess the only time I can handle cold and snow is on a holiday like Thanksgiving and Christmas and maybe NYE.  Other than that I just cannot.
Oh and guess what...our Friendsgiving is looking cool and rainy.  I really wanted this to be an outside event with no children in my house but HAHA on me.  I'm planning my layout for an indoors Friendsgiving but praying for a break in the weather and us being outside!

4.  No Reply Bloggers
Dear No Reply Blogger -
You may not know who you are but I must say this.  I reply to all the comments on my blog and when I see that you are a no-reply blogger it makes me cringe.  I want you to know I read your comment and I want to thank you and give you a kind reply.  But I cannot.  So to all of you who may be going - why the hell doesn't she respond to my comment - there is your answer.  Stop alienating yourselves (just kidding).
xo
Amanda

5.  Christmas Crafting
I have officially made my Christmas Crafting list for 2015.  The catch is I am not sharing it on the blog because sometimes people I gift to see the blog.  Some things I just have to keep under wraps.  But I am very excited about showing them later in December (ahem, after a certain date.)  Now to go to Michael's!

Fall Fashion #5: Thanksgiving Look Book

Trust when I say our Thanksgiving is so low key and laid back.  I enjoy a day of jeans, boots, and a sweater.  However there are some times when I long for a more formal celebration.  This week I compiled some Thanksgiving outfits I could totally live with!

Chic & Comfortable Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas for Women 2015 | Best Fashion Style For Holiday by Makeup Tutorials at http://makeuptutorials.com/chic-comfortable-thanksgiving-outfit-ideas-for-women-2015/:

If I were hosting Thanksgiving...I would love to wear this dress.  First off, the colors!  Second off, the detail!  The dress is a mix of romanticism and simplicity.  I love it.

Nice winter outfit - love the sweater, scarf, jeans, boots - total color combo is very much my style.:

For our traditional mountain trip (if the weather is warmer rather than cooler) - and I realize I do not own a sweater in any color but black!

Football party and tailgating outfits. Thanksgiving means football and a comfy outfit.:
Thanksgiving at home!  Chilled out with a crockpot turkey and your best friends and lovers?  Ohhhh yeah!  Plus sweats give you way more room to stuff yourself like you are the gobbler!

Thanksgiving outfit 2:

Thanksgiving at Grandma's or Mom's or Aunt Betty's.  Yes, this is the look of classic style.  Plus you're ready to go shopping at 2 AM.

And finally...

lacy sheath dress (original price, $44) available at #Maurices:
My formal pic is this lace sheath.  The color, the lace, ahhh so pretty and festive.

What are you wearing this Thanksgiving?  Which look is more "you"?

Fall {Table} Fashion

I'm taking a break from my little, fun, fashion posts to focus on pretty table ideas for Thanksgiving!  I'm a sucker for a beautiful table.  I love crisp linen, fresh flowers, and shiny serving platters.  However, my own Thanksgiving generally lacks that!  We enjoy a chain restaurant meal (that is pretty darn delicious) and then traipes around on a mountain farm for a while to find the "perfect tree."

One day I imagine we'll change that tradition and maybe have a more traditional dinner but I'm not pushing it until I'm 96.

Gorgeous silk floral and pine cone centerpieces. Just make sure to make them tall enough to to interrupt the flow of conversation. #weddings #weddingplanning #weddingideas:

This table is cozy and inviting.  I love that it is casual but very well put together. Utilizing what makes the season so beautiful, nature, is also a major plus.

47 Fabulous DIY ideas for Thanksgiving table decor:

Dare I say this is a bit more formal?  I'll blame the white pumpkins!  How do I love this table?  Let me count the ways.  It is bright.  The centerpieces, though they are pumpkins seem a bit dainty to me which I love, Notice how the napkin corresponds to the table cloth by being just a switch of colors?  That is a great detail.  I'm ready to dine at this table!

Thanksgiving Table- I can't wait to get out our Thanksgiving dinnerware and set a beautiful tablescape!:

For the more classical and formal table - go a bit Victorian.  You may be surprised to hear that I find this table inspiring.  First off, this is a total throwback to the America so many years ago.  Here's why I love this table:  I see hints of my grandmother's collection of dishware and ceramics.  I love the crystal.  Notice the flatware - are you in love yet?  Oh and that turkey in the center of the table?  That brings back memories of pieces my Mom-o has.  It should be known I'm a sucker for those plates as well.  How do you feel about the tapestry table cloth?  (Here it comes....the Downton Reference) - do you think Old Lady Grantham would approve?)

Inexpensive, fun table idea. Use butcher paper (or brown mailing paper) as a "tablecloth". Write guests names at each place.:

Sometimes simple is best.  Move over burlap, this is a job for butcher paper.  I love this simplicity and feel like it really captures the point of Thanksgiving  Maybe we don't need shine and glitz but just to enjoy one anothers company.  And yes, a really great meal.

How is your table coming together?
